Before the concert started, I performed an informal interview of the people lining up on the sidewalk to get into the concert. I asked them, “who are you here to see tonight?” A good deal of them replied “JAWNY” but many of them said that they came to see Wallice too which meant that the crowd knew that they were coming to see two up and coming “Indie Pop” stars.

Sometimes when the opening act is an “unknown” the audience treats them as background music for their conversations, but this was not the case tonight. Wallice took the stage supported by another lead guitar player, a drummer and a bass player. She immediately won over the all ages crowd with her upbeat sing-along opening song, “90’s American Superstar” and kept the audience singing along until her final song “23”, her emotional lament about being “stuck at home with a fearful future” ahead of her. Her sad but defiant tone and cryptic lyrics sounded like she was reaching out to the mostly Gen Z crowd with a special message; just express yourself and don’t worry about what everyone thinks about you!

JAWNY kicked off his 2023 Tour by releasing his new album “it’s never fair but always true” on this date and by performing at the Quartyard in San Diego to a sold-out crowd. He wrapped his 12-song set around “Honeypie”, his Mega Hit (40million views on Youtube) and put on a highly energetic concert that fired up the enthusiastic crowd. JAWNY started out the show with upbeat tunes like “Take it Back” and he knew how to draw everyone into his performance by deliberately signaling the crowd to hold up their cell phones and sing louder on the song “You Belong to Me”. JAWNY put on a very athletic concert. He was always moving and dancing around the stage while jamming his guitar along with the steady backbeat of the bass player and drummer and on the song “La La La” their combined sound produced an intense swirling energy that drove the crowd wild. At the end of the show, he slowed it all down to sing his new single the ballad “Fall in Love” that was just released on his new album. The emotions of that song coupled with the synchronized and dramatic lighting dramatically brought the concert to an emotionally rewarding end.

After the concert I talked to a couple of Gen Z girls, Mia and Halle from Rancho Bernardo High School, to find out what they liked about the show. They said they liked “how free and loose” both performers were on stage. I think they hit on an important theme that music provides to our daily lives. We all, on some level, long to be able to freely express our emotions and we long to be able to move freely through our lives like the performers we watch perform on stage. After watching this awesome concert by JAWNY and Wallice I can safely say that everyone will be able to take home some of that “free and loose” feeling from the show tonight.
