Enigmatic Vermont artist Black Fly returns today with a new single and Patrick Golan-directed video for “Mumble Mouth” via Samedi Records (altopalo). Listen to “Mumble Mouth” HERE and watch HERE.
Black Fly, aka Joseph Rittlig, uses pulsing synths, drums, and a sophisticated understanding of piano to take you to where you want to go. Whether that’s an evergreen forest in the Northeast where the music was written, a specific room in your grandma’s house where you first tried cacio e pepe twenty years ago, or a little too far out in a riptide where your endorphins kick in to save your own life; whatever and wherever gets your heart going.
Of the new single, Rittling simply says, "’Mumble Mouth’ is a straightforward, simple love song about love that's imperfect but committed."
Using his surroundings in rural Vermont as some of his main inspirations, with juncture points and crossroads leading to his musical decisions as well as his innate sensibility for movement, Black Fly’s music isn’t any one thing. Within the lingering, seemingly nothing-moments of the video lies a Delphic feeling of the unknown. Each of these lives – each of these human beings pictured – has a purpose and a path, and it’s like they’re awaiting the oracle to tell them what to do.
The lilting chords on the piano almost mock the seriousness of that thought with playfulness, sending you an irresistible invitation to get up and dance in the sand with the young couple you catch a glimpse of. All the while, the slight warble, and depth in Black Fly’s voice reflect the breadth of possibility; he’s singing from his chest, from as deep as he can know about love and life.
Black Fly has previously drifted in and out of the public eye with one-off singles, making early fans at The Fader, Consequence, The Line Of Best Fit, among others. Stay tuned for more music and news soon. "Mumble Mouth" by Black Fly is out now, listen/buy it here.
