"Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." -Plato-
Seeing Styx live for the first time at the Pala Casino Starlight Theater was a memorable experience! They came out strong, with high energy and sounded exceptional. The band opened with "Gone Gone Gone" from their newest album turn "The Mission. Styx performed Queen's legendary Bohemian Rhapsody (Lawrence Gowen was fantastic on keyboards) that lead into their 1977 classic mega hit "Come Sail Away".
The show was 2 1/2 hours long. There was no opening act on this night. The lighting, stage, acoustics and overall show was an amazing event. I recognized many songs that I have heard over the years including "The Grand Illusion", "Pieces of Eight", "Mr. Roboto", "Light Up" just to name a few, and some new material from their latest, well received concept album, "The Mission", which the lead singer said was a dedication to all the work currently going into the mission to Mars.
I would definitely see this band again if I get the chance. I highly recommend attending a show during this 2019 tour. All the members of Styx are true rock icons that have stood the test of time. The band knows how to throw down one hell of a performance. This was one of the best live shows I have ever seen!
Each band member's performance was unique yet they work together effortlessly as a well oiled unit. I guess that’s why they are Styx right?!?!? Tommy Shaw stood out to me as the classic rock star but each of the members were brilliant, one of the top classic rock bands of all time. The exuberant audience was standing and dancing in the cool breeze of this exquisite outdoor venue.
At the conclusion of the show a guitar that had been signed by the band was raffled off.
Bravo to Styx whose 40 plus years, four Multi-Platinum albums,The Grand Illusion (1977), Pieces of Eight (1978), Cornerstone (1979) and Paradise Theatre (1981), superior live performances, has not only stood the test of time, but has been elevated with the addition of "The Mission" album.
