The Accidentals opened the show to a sparse midweek crowd but by the time they were through, they had everyone’s attention. Playing over 200 live shows a year has given them the ability to connect with an audience. Named as “One of The Top Ten Bands to Watch in 2017” by Yahoo Music, the band consists of Savannah Buist (Vocals, violin, electric guitar and bass guitar), Katie Larson (Vocals, cello, electric guitar) and Michael Dause (Drums and background vocals). They kicked off their nine-song set with “KW” a song from their new album “Odyssey” and went on to win over the crowd with an eclectic mix of vocals and instrumentation.  Their songs varied from bluegrass dueling violin and cello string instruments,  morphing into plucking the strings in a more upbeat jazzy style on the next song and then switching over to a more traditional rock song with electric guitar and bass with a strong backbeat from the drum.  By the time they were through with their set, they had the crowd dancing and ready for some Moon Hooch.  After their set, I talked with Katie Larson and she said, “Opening for Moon Hooch is a big thrill for us. They are one of our favorite bands and we feel so lucky to be on this tour with them”.  Be sure to go to their website to check out their new album “Odyssey” along with their previous songs and videos at www.accidentalsmusic.com.

After a short intermission, Moon Hooch took the stage to a packed Music Box.  The band consists of Mike Wilbur (Tenor Sax and Keyboards), Wenzl McGowen (Baritone Sax, Contrabass Clarinet, Keyboards) and James Muschler on Drums. Don’t be deceived by the size of the band or by their instruments.  Back in 2010, they were banned from busking their brand of high energy music in the Subways of New York City because too many people were dancing on the edge of the subway platform and the city was afraid that someone would get hurt. They are able to create sounds like none I’ve ever heard before.  They combine shrieks from the tenor sax with ultra-low sounds from the Contrabass Clarinet to punch out eerie harmonies to unusual beat patterns from the drums. The energy they created inside the club seemed to linger and build up with each song. With few lyrics to break up the instrumental flow and no banter with the crowd in between songs it felt like the set they played was one long song.  Using circular breathing techniques to hold onto a note for minutes, building up energy through their instruments and  driving the crowd into a dancing frenzy that lasted the whole night. Though their style of jazz music is not fully accepted by traditional jazz aficionados, the band has built up its own base of supporters to the point where they are constantly touring to meet the demand of fans all over the USA, Canada, and Europe.
